Ascended Masters and the Seven Rays

In this spiritual tradition, ascended masters are understood to be beings who walked the human path and completed it, and who since then accompany anyone who asks. The seven rays are seven qualities of divine light — seven colours, seven ways of serving — and each ray is associated with a master. This is a teaching, not a proven fact, and that is how I will tell it to you.

Where I am speaking from

This article is not science and does not pretend to be. No laboratory has measured a ray; no experiment has recorded a master. This is not something science studies or could verify.

What exists is a spiritual tradition with more than a century behind it — texts, human teachers who taught it, and a great many people who live by it. I am one of those people, and I have been walking this path for more than seventeen years.

I will tell it to you as I understand it, with the door open for you to come in or not. Free will comes first. If your path is a different one, or if you believe none of this, you will find no reproach here.

Where the teaching comes from

This is worth knowing, because saying it takes nothing away. It adds seriousness.

The idea of a brotherhood of masters guiding humanity takes its current form in the late nineteenth century, in the circle of the Theosophical Society, founded in 1875 in New York by Helena Blavatsky, Henry Steel Olcott and others. The first names and the first architecture come from there.

The classification of the seven rays was developed and ordered in the early twentieth century within that same current, by writers such as Charles Leadbeater and Alice Bailey. That is when the colours, the qualities and the correspondences were set.

In the 1930s the I AM Activity appeared in the United States, led by Guy Ballard and Edna Ballard, placing Saint Germain at the centre and popularising the practice of decrees. In 1958 Mark L. Prophet founded The Summit Lighthouse, later led by Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and it is largely through that lineage that the teaching reached Latin America in the form that circulates today.

So: a modern tradition, with names, dates and books. Not an ancient secret recovered from the mists. Anyone who tells you otherwise is embellishing.

What is an ascended master?

In this teaching, an ascended master is understood to be a being who lived, learned, served and completed their path, and who no longer needs to return to a body. From that state they remain available to whoever calls.

Three things matter here.

They are not gods. In my own understanding, which is Christian, God is God and the masters are elder brothers and sisters. They are not worshipped. They are asked for company.

They compel nothing. Free will is central: in this tradition it is taught that a master does not intervene unless asked. No forces that take hold of you.

They do not replace your own work. Nobody walks the road for you. What is asked for is accompaniment, not for someone to solve your life.

What are the seven rays?

The rays are understood as seven expressions of one light. Like white light passing through a prism and opening into colours: one source, several qualities.

Each ray has a colour, a quality of soul, and a master associated with it. They are not seven compartments or seven teams. They are seven ways for divine love to express itself, and we need all of them.

You will notice that names shift from one book to another. That is normal: the lists vary between currents, and anyone who presents one version as the only true one is not telling you the whole story. This is the one I use.

Where Sananda, Jesus the Christ, fits

This is the question I am asked most, and it is the one that gives this space its name.

Sananda is, in this tradition, the name by which the Master of universal love is recognised — known also as Jesus the Christ. He is the centre of my path, and I do not hide it.

In most lists he is associated with the sixth ray: service, devotion and peace. The ray of the one who washes feet, who sits with the sick, who stays. Some currents link him instead to the second ray, the ray of teaching. I do not argue about that difference. I keep what both versions say alike: self-giving, and words that heal.

Let me be very clear about one thing. That I use the name Sananda does not mean I ask you to use it, or that I place it above the name you pray with. If you are Catholic and prefer to say Jesus, say Jesus. If this way of naming him feels foreign to you, that is a legitimate reason not to come here, and I respect it fully. How this is worked with — and how it is not

In my practice this is not decoration, and not a catalogue of names to impress anyone.

Before a session I pray and ask to be a clean channel. I ask for accompaniment — of Sananda, and depending on what the person brings, of the quality of the ray I sense is needed — and then I get out of the way. It is God who heals. The practitioner only holds the space.

With someone on the table I do not deliver a lecture about masters and colours. Most people who come to me arrive tired; they have not come to study. If they ask, I tell them. If they do not ask, I say nothing.

And there is one thing I never do: use this teaching to promise something. No ray will bring you money, a job, a partner, or lift bad luck. Anyone selling you that is selling fear, and usually charges well for it.

What I see in the consulting room, in Medellín and Santa Elena

Santa Elena is a cloud-forest village in the mountains above Medellín, where I also work. People arrive here with all of this very mixed up — a video someone saw, an aunt who "works with the rays", a book from the eighties lent by a friend.

What I see most often is a confusion that saddens me: the belief that some masters are kind and others get angry, and that if you perform the ritual wrongly something bad will follow. That is not in the teaching. In this tradition the opposite is taught: nothing that comes from love will frighten you.

I once sat with a woman who arrived convinced that one of her rays had been "closed", because somebody told her so and charged her for it. Much of that session was simply giving her back her calm, and explaining that here nobody was going to charge her to open anything.

And in Santa Elena, with the mist moving between the trees at the end of the afternoon, this conversation happens by itself. You do not need to name seven colours when the forest is already making them. I wrote about that in meeting nature and the Christic being.

What this is not

It is not a religion. There is nothing to join, no dues, no need to give up your faith. I go into that in is Reiki a religion?.

It is not a diagnosis. No ray tells you what is wrong with you, and none replaces a doctor or a psychologist.

It is not a hierarchy of people. Nobody stands "higher" for working with one ray rather than another. When that idea appears, we have left the spiritual behind and entered the ego.

And it is not compulsory. You can receive a Reiki session here without believing a word of this, and the session will be exactly as careful.

Frequently asked questions

Do ascended masters really exist? I cannot prove it to you and I will not try. It is an article of faith within a spiritual tradition, not a verifiable fact. For me they are a real presence and a companionship on the road; for someone else they may be a useful symbolic language; for someone else, nothing at all. All three positions seem respectable to me, and none of them stops you receiving a session well.

Which is my ray? Some currents speak of a personal or birth ray. I do not work that way, and I am wary of anyone who assigns you one for a fee. I prefer the question reversed: which quality do you need today? If it is steadiness, blue. If it is forgiveness, violet. If it is calm, pink. That you can explore yourself, with no intermediary.

Is this the same as New Age? It shares roots with it, yes — theosophy is one of the sources New Age drew from. I would rather say that plainly than pretend to an antiquity this teaching does not have. What I do also rests on my Christian faith and on the Reiki lineage of Mikao Usui, and those two live together on my path without conflict.

Do I have to be Christian to work with the seven rays? No. I am, and I say so openly, but this teaching is practised by people of very different beliefs and by people with no religion at all. Nothing needs to be believed here in order to be treated with respect.

Can I call on a master by myself, at home? In this tradition it is understood that you can, and that no intermediary is needed: a moment of silence, a name, and a sincere request are enough. You do not need expensive candles, courses, or anyone's permission. If someone tells you that you cannot do it without them, be wary.
