What Does Reiki Feel Like?

By Uber Puerta · Published

Heat, tingling, heaviness, sleep, emotion — or almost nothing. What a Reiki session really feels like and why. Ask us anything before you book a session.

What Does Reiki Feel Like?

Most often: heat coming from the practitioner's hands, a soft tingling, a sense of weight or of floating, and a relaxation that arrives on its own. Some people fall asleep. Some become emotional without knowing why. And some feel almost nothing — which is also a normal response and does not mean the session was wasted.

There is no single answer

Be wary of anyone who gives you one.

What does exist is a repertoire of sensations that repeat. After years of holding sessions, you learn that people's descriptions resemble each other closely, even when they have never read a word about it beforehand.

I will tell you them the way they are told to me, without decoration and without explaining more than can honestly be explained.

The most common sensations

SensationHow people describe itWhen it usually appears
Heat"Like your hands are burning"From the first minutes, especially shoulders and abdomen
Tingling"Sparks", "little bubbles", "a very soft current"Hands, feet, sometimes the face
Heaviness"As if I were sinking into the table"Between minute 10 and 25
Floating"As if my body were not touching anything"Middle of the session
Involuntary movementA leg that jumps, a finger that twitchesAs held tension releases
SleepFalling deeply asleep without planning toAny time; very common
EmotionTears, a lump in the throat, reliefUsually the second half
Colours or imagesViolets, golds, loose scenesBehind closed eyes; not for everyone
Little or nothingJust quiet and restCommon in first sessions

None of these is better than another. There is no ranking. Feeling a lot does not mean "it worked more".

Why do the hands feel hot?

It is the question I am asked most at the end.

Part of the answer is simple and physical: still hands resting on a body for several minutes trap heat between skin and fabric. That is plain thermal conduction and there is no mystery in it.

But many people describe a heat that does not behave that way. They say it appears suddenly, or arrives before contact, or is felt ten centimetres from the body.

From my own experience I understand it as vital energy circulating. That is my framework and I will not impose it on you. Science has not demonstrated the existence of that energy field, and saying otherwise would be dishonest.

What I can say calmly is that the sensation is real for the person feeling it, and that you do not need to share my interpretation to benefit from an hour of sustained calm.

Why tears sometimes come

This is the part that frightens people most and should frighten them least.

In a body that has been on alert for months, deep relaxation does not arrive alone. It arrives with everything that state of alert was holding down. When the nervous system lowers its guard, what was underneath comes up.

So there are tears with no obvious cause, or nervous laughter, or an enormous sigh that sounds like a sob.

It is not a crisis. It is not "toxins releasing". It is simply a body that had something pending and found a safe place to let it out.

I will never interpret your tears for you. I will not tell you which memory it was, which chakra was blocked, or which past life surfaced. That would be invention. I stay with you in silence, and if you want to talk afterwards, we talk.

What if I feel nothing? Am I doing it wrong?

No. There is nothing to do, so there is nothing to do wrong.

Some people arrive so depleted that the body simply rests — and resting is already a great deal. Some have a soberer perceptual style: no colours, no currents, and still they get up with different shoulders.

And there is a common trap: watching so closely for a sensation that the watching itself prevents it. It is like trying to fall asleep while checking every minute whether you have fallen asleep.

My practical suggestion: in a first session, look for nothing. Just be there. What needs to appear will appear once the body trusts the room.

What I see in my practice

One detail works as my compass: the breath.

Almost everyone arrives breathing high in the chest, in short inhalations. I say nothing about it. I do not ask anyone to breathe in any particular way.

And at some point — sometimes at minute eight, sometimes at minute twenty-five — the breath drops into the abdomen on its own and lengthens. You can hear it. It is an audible change in the room.

When that happens, the rest of the session tends to be different. The hands are resting on a body that is no longer defending itself.

In Santa Elena, the cloud-forest township above Medellín, it happens sooner. The altitude, the damp cold, the smell of wet earth: the setting does part of the work. In the city, the body needs a few more minutes to understand that it has stopped.

Sensations that should not happen

Here I want to be very clear, because almost nobody says it.

A Reiki session should not hurt. There should be no pressure, no manoeuvres, no stretching. If something is uncomfortable, say so in the moment; a good practitioner stops without asking why.

You should never feel trapped. If at any point you want to stop, we stop. No explanations, no insistence, and no one telling you that "something important was just happening".

And if a practitioner touches you where it was not agreed, proposes that you remove clothing, or reads your tears as proof of something, that is a warning sign. I go into it in how to choose a Reiki practitioner.

Do the sensations change over later sessions?

They usually do, though not predictably.

The most common change is a faster entry. In a first session the body may take twenty minutes to let go; by the fourth, sometimes three.

Many people also report that sensations become quieter and the rest deeper. At first there are fireworks; later there is silence, which is better.

And some feel more as they go, simply because they have learned to notice things they used to miss.

Does distance Reiki feel the same?

Many people say it does, and describe the same repertoire: heat, weight, sleep, emotion.

Others notice a real difference: at home, the frame is missing. No treatment table, no leaving your routine, no still person in the room. That changes the experience even when it does not change the intention.

I treat it honestly — including the reasonable scepticism it provokes — in distance Reiki: how it works.

What the evidence says about these sensations

Two things are worth separating.

That people describe calm, warmth and relief is well documented as reported experience. That this proves the existence of a channelled energy is not.

The Cochrane review on Reiki for anxiety and depression (Joyce and Herbison, 2015) found only three randomised trials with around 62 participants in total, and concluded there is not enough evidence to know whether Reiki is useful for those conditions. A more recent meta-analysis (Liu and colleagues, 2025, in Systematic Reviews, 11 trials and 661 participants) found a small but statistically significant improvement in quality of life, with high heterogeneity between studies.

That is little, and it is honest to say it is little. It is equally honest to say that the NCCIH notes Reiki has not been shown to have harmful effects.

Translated into practice: what you feel is yours and it is valid; what I can claim about its cause is limited.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to fall asleep and remember nothing? Yes, and it is one of the most common responses. Sleeping does not interrupt the session. Many people who sleep are the ones who report better rest that night. If you arrive with accumulated sleep debt it is almost predictable. You do not need to remember anything for the session to have meant something.

My leg jerked. What was that? Involuntary movements — a leg that jumps, a finger that twitches, a brief tremor — are common when a tense body begins to release. They resemble the jolts that sometimes happen as you fall asleep. They signal nothing serious and nothing extraordinary. If they bother you, say so and we adjust your position.

Can I feel cold instead of heat? Yes. Some people describe coolness at the forehead or in the hands, or an alternation between warm and cool. Others feel generally cold as they relax, because metabolism slows. That is why a blanket is always within reach. Asking for one interrupts nothing.

Does feeling a lot mean Reiki worked better for me? No. The intensity of sensation measures nothing. People who felt almost nothing often describe better sleep afterwards, and people who felt a great deal sometimes leave exactly as they arrived. What is worth watching is how you are over the following days, not how dramatic the hour was.

Can I talk during the session? You can. Nobody will ask you for silence. That said, most people stop talking on their own after the first few minutes, because the body asks for something else. If you need to say something — that you are cold, that a position bothers you, that you want to stop — say it at any moment.

Is it a bad sign to feel sad afterwards? It is not a bad sign, but it deserves care. An emotion surfacing after deep relaxation usually settles within hours. If instead it persists, deepens, or interferes with your daily life, that belongs with a mental health professional, not with a complementary therapy. Seeking help there is both sensible and brave.
