Energy Clearing for Homes and Spaces

By Uber Puerta · Published

How to harmonise your home step by step: airing, order, light, sound, water, safe smudging and intention. Practical and honest, with no magical promises.

Energy Clearing for Homes and Spaces

Harmonising a space combines very concrete things — airing it, tidying it, letting light in, letting sound move through it — with a sustained intention and, if that is your path, a prayer. There is no scientific evidence that a "heavy energy" exists and can be cleared, and there is no need to pretend otherwise: what is done here has real effects through fairly simple channels.

First: if your home feels heavy, start with the obvious

This comes first because it is the most important part of the article.

When someone tells me their home feels heavy, my first question is not a spiritual one. I ask about the material, because very often the answer is there:

  • Is there damp, mould or a persistent smell? Damp affects mood and respiratory health. A stick of incense will not fix that. A technician will.
  • Does it air badly? A closed space with little light tires anyone out.
  • Is there gas, an old water heater, a stove that smells? A leak or poor combustion causes headaches and malaise. That is a technical emergency, not an energetic one.
  • Are you sleeping badly, exhausted? Sometimes what is heavy is not the house. It is you, in the house.
  • Is there an unspoken family conflict? A home where nobody is speaking feels heavy, and rightly so. That asks for a conversation, and sometimes for family therapy.
  • Is there shouting, fear, someone controlling or hurting you? Then this is not a question of harmonising. It is a situation of violence and you need professional help. In Colombia you can call Línea 155, the national orientation line for women facing violence, or Línea 123 for emergencies. Please ask for help. No ritual replaces that.

I say it plainly because I have watched people spend money on clearings while the real problem sat untouched in the living room.

What harmonising a space means in this tradition

That said, the practice exists and I have done it for years. Here is how I understand it.

In this tradition it is taught that spaces hold something of what happens in them, and that a place can accompany you or work against you. This is not something science studies or could verify, and it does not claim to be so.

What we do is twofold: we care for the physical, and we hold an intention. Nothing more, and nothing less.

If you want to know how I work when I am called to a home, it is described in energy clearing and harmonising of spaces.

An honesty that costs me nothing

A good part of what you will notice afterwards comes from the order, the air, the light that got in, and the plain fact of having given your home an hour of real attention.

That invalidates nothing. Quite the opposite.

A ritual is a way of marking that something is changing. Tidying with intention is not the same as tidying in a bad mood, even if the result looks identical. If someone reads all of this as psychology and fresh air, that seems entirely reasonable to me. I also pray while I do it. Both fit.

What you will not find here is a promise. This does not attract money, does not bring a job, does not bring anyone back and does not "lift bad luck". Anyone offering you that is charging you for a fear.

The practice, step by step

You can do this yourself, today, buying almost nothing. Set aside a quiet morning. There is more for working on yourself in the self-healing guide.

1. Air it out

Open everything that opens: windows, wardrobe doors, drawers that have been shut for months. Let the air cross from one side of the home to the other.

If you live in Medellín, the mornings usually give you a good hour before the sun gets strong. Higher up, towards Santa Elena — the cloud-forest village above the city — take the moment when the mist lifts.

Half an hour of cross-ventilation does more than people expect.

2. Tidy and let go

Not a deep clean. Getting out of the house what is no longer yours.

Pick one place — a drawer, a wardrobe, the table by the door — and take out what you do not use, what is broken, what you keep out of guilt. An object that weighs on you every time you see it is not decorating anything.

Give it away or throw it out, and let it leave the house that same day, rather than sitting in a bag in the corridor.

3. Light

Open the curtains. Clean the windows — they get dirty unnoticed and steal a lot of light. Replace a dead bulb.

Put a lamp in the corner that is always dark. It is remarkable what a lamp solves.

4. Sound

Walk through the home making a sound: a bowl, a bell, your hands, your voice. Pay attention to corners and to the space behind large furniture.

You need buy nothing. Clapping works. Singing works.

Do it slowly, and listening. The difference between this and making noise is attention.

5. Water

Mop with clean water. If you like, add sea salt, or a few drops of lemon, or some rosemary boiled and strained.

Change dirty water for clean as often as you need, and mop towards the door. One detail: too much salt damages wooden floors. Use little, and test a corner first.

6. Smoke, if you want it — and carefully

This deserves a serious paragraph, because smoke is not harmless.

You can use rosemary, eucalyptus, incense, palo santo, or whatever your family has always used. In Medellín fresh rosemary and eucalyptus are easy to find, and I like them for being close to hand.

Safety rules, no exceptions:

  • Always ventilate, during and after. Never with the house shut.
  • Very little smoke. The aim is not to fill the house; a thread of smoke is enough.
  • Never leave embers unattended. Not for a minute. Put them out completely, with water, before leaving the room.
  • Use a clay or metal container, with sand or salt in the base, resting on a surface that cannot burn.
  • If anyone in the house has asthma, COPD, a respiratory allergy, or is a baby, do not do it with that person inside — or do not do it at all. Smoke irritates the airways, and that much is well documented by the World Health Organization.
  • Be careful with animals. Birds are extremely sensitive to smoke: take them out of the house or use no smoke at all, never in the same room. With dogs and cats, let them move to another space and keep the air moving. On working with animals I wrote in Reiki for pets.
  • If you are pregnant, prefer to skip the smoke. Airing and tidying do the same work.

If smoke is not an option, nothing is lost: use scented water, a plain water diffuser, or nothing at all. The practice does not depend on it.

7. The intention

This is the step that makes it harmonising rather than housework.

Stand still in the middle of the home and breathe three times. Say — aloud or inwardly — something simple: a prayer from your own tradition, or a sentence of your own: "may this house be a place of rest for those who live here and for those who come in".

If you work with the violet flame, this is a good moment; the exercise is in the violet flame and Saint Germain.

Close with gratitude. One word is enough.

How often

There is no rule. Think in moments rather than calendar dates.

After a move. After a long illness in the house. After a serious argument. When someone leaves, or arrives. When the year turns.

And once a month, if it gives you peace: air it, clear one drawer, say a sentence.

What I do not recommend is doing it out of anxiety, over and over, as though the house were contaminated. When that urgency appears, it is almost never about the house.

What I see when I am called to a home

Almost nobody calls about the house. They call about what is happening inside it.

I have walked into apartments in El Poblado where what was heavy was a recent separation nobody had named. I have been in family homes where the room that "does not feel right" is the room of someone who died, and the harmonising ends up being the first time the family says so out loud.

And I have been in homes where all that was needed was a window that had been stuck for two years.

When someone tells me there is fear in their house, or shouting, or someone who controls them, I stop there. I do not continue. I tell them that this needs professional help and I give them the numbers. It is the only responsible thing to do.

Frequently asked questions

Is "heavy energy" in a house real? It is not something science has studied or could verify, and I would rather tell you that plainly. In this tradition it is understood that spaces hold something of what happens in them, and that is where I work from. It is also true that a closed, dark, cluttered home feels bad for concrete reasons worth checking first.

Does it attract money, work or a partner? No, and I will never tell you otherwise. Harmonising a space does not change your finances or your love life, ever. If someone offers you a clearing to "open your paths" for a fee, they are selling you fear. What an ordered, aired, well-lit home can do is help you feel better placed to make your own decisions.

Is smudging safe around children or pets? With care, and sometimes better not at all. Smoke irritates the airways. With babies, asthmatic people and birds, do not do it — birds are especially vulnerable. With dogs and cats, keep them in another room with good ventilation. And never leave embers unattended.

Do I have to believe in anything for this to work? No. Airing, tidying, cleaning the windows and giving your home real attention will do you good whatever you believe. The prayer part is optional and it is mine; if your path is another, use your own words or skip that step. Every belief system is respected here, including having none.
